Portraits
A Voice Beyond the Frame
From Jabbi Delahaye’s print collection.
Enlarge image ↗Bob Marley’s face emerges through warm earth tones and textured, painterly passages. His dreadlocks flow around the portrait, while the focused gaze gives the composition an attentive, searching presence. Light gathers across his features, drawing us towards the person within the familiar image.
The portrait invites an act of remembering. For those who have lived with his music, a face can call up a melody, a lyric, a gathering, or a particular time in life. The image is silent, yet the encounter may be full of sound.
That relationship between public recognition and private memory gives the work its emotional centre. Each viewer brings a different connection, shaped by where and how the music reached them.
A Voice Beyond the Frame reflects on the intimacy of that connection: how a voice encountered through a recording can become part of our own experience, and how a portrait can bring us back to listening.
